THE PROJECT

The project “ZERO TUTA” with project code M16ΣYN2-00271 is an approved project of Submeasure 16.1 – 16.2 “Establishment and operation of Operational Groups of the European Innovation Partnership for agricultural productivity and sustainability”, Action 2, of the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 (RDP 2014-2020). The project is implemented in the Region of Crete, in the area of Heraklion and aims to integrate the principles of integrated pest management in the cultivation of greenhouse tomato in order to reduce the use of plant protection products for the control of the insect Tuta absoluta, in line with the objectives set by the EU strategy From Farm to Fork.

AIM OF THE PROJECT

The aim of the project is to implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan with minimal use of conventional insecticides and a combination of different control methods to avoid building resistance to certain pesticides and to make greenhouse tomato cultivation sustainable for the producer.

The most important innovative element of the proposal is the simultaneous and complementary application of innovative methods in dealing with the pest, which can hardly applied in practice without scientific guidance and the relevant specialized know-how and in particular:

  1. Prevention
  2. Monitoring of infestation levels
  3. The application of natural, biotechnological and chemical methods
  4. The evaluation of the effectiveness of commercial insecticides
  5. The application of alternative methods of pest management
